He studied at the Lowestoft School of Art, followed by the Royal Academy Schools and gained prominence in the 1960s, often collaborating with his wife Elizabeth Rose. Their book ' Old Winkle and the Seagulls' won the prestigious Kate Greenaway medal in 1960.
